We did not drive to the Douro Valley since the harvest was over during our time in Porto. However there were many Port wineries on the Gaia side of Porto that offered a tour and Port wine tasting.
We chose a guided tour from Ramos Pinto Cellars to learn about Port wine. It turned out to be a private tour, since no one else joined. Our tour guide took us through the Adriano Ramos Pinto museum, which included the founder's office and memorabilia from the company's history. The tour included the traditional Port wine cellar, where our tour guide explained winemaking and storage process.

At the end of the tour, we were provided with a tasting of three Ramos Pinto Port wines: white wine, burgundy, and ruby. Surprisingly, Thanh enjoyed the white Port wine and finished her glass, after which she was quite red and a bit loopy.

We learned from our tour guide that Adriano Ramos Pinto was known for his marketing campaigns using artistic and controversial posters. His posters created a lot of talk around town. He started out exporting half of his Port wines to South America before growing big in his own country of Portugal.

RECOMMENDATIONS: We really enjoyed the tour of Ramos Pinto winery! You should definitely go on one of the Port winery tours, if not Ramos Pinto.
